Foundations

"Even though the future seems far away, it is actually beginning right now." - Mattie Stepanek

The foundations of Retrospect are now underway. The two major elements are design, and of course development. Let’s take a quick look at what we’ve been working on.

Design

Designing Retrospect has been a joy, as this is something that I’ve been wanting for a while now. I want it to be a platform that feels fun, and feels personal. Something that you create your own experience in without it feeling like a stiff tool for stat tracking.

The end goal for Retrospect is for it to feel as described above, fun and personal. When you go to your profile, we want it to feel like, “yeah this is home. This is MY home”.

After all, games are fun and also can be deeply personal, and we want you all to be able to make your profiles personal, your journals personal, everything.

We don’t have any designs to share with you yet, but stay tuned - future blog posts will highlight what a bit more what we’ve been working on.

Development

The early stages of developing a new project are always kinda fun. It’s hectic, chaotic, exciting and it changes fast. It’s also a unique challenge, because there’s nothing put in place yet and the devil is always in the details. Always.

The development focus over the past few weeks has been designing and implementing ways to ingest data from our source, which is IGDB, owned by Twitch.

IGDB is amazing because of its comprehensive data, but that can be a blessing and a curse, so we have been spending time deciding on what pieces of data to take, and to leave behind. Additionally, how to update new data in the future so that it stays in sync with IGDB, but also to figure out a line in the sand that feels like the right amount of games, and additional data that we think users will care about.

After data ingestion is complete, core functionality like authentication, and other pages will be written. Of course, we’ll keep you updated on that progress.

In conclusion, fantastic progress has been made on Retrospect over the past few weeks, and we’ll continue to post updates here to let you in on what’s going on.
